Uniform to Civilian — Career Maps and Resources
You have spent years building skills that most people will never have. Now you are thinking about what comes next.
The good news: security management is one of the most natural second careers for SAF and Home Team professionals.
The leadership, operational discipline, crisis management, and investigative skills you have developed in uniform are exactly what corporate security employers are looking for.
The challenge is knowing how to frame what you have done — and where you fit in the civilian market.
These resources are designed to help you with exactly that.
WHAT YOU WILL FIND HERE
ASIS International Singapore Chapter has developed four career maps and three companion guides specifically for SAF and Home Team professionals transitioning into the private security sector. They are free to download and use.
The career maps
Use these maps to see how your rank, training, and key assignments relate to civilian security roles — and which ASIS certifications will help you stand out. There are four maps, one for each service track:
- SAF Commissioned Officer Career Map — Download PDF
- SAF Specialist, Warrant Officer and Military Expert (MDES) Career Map — Download PDF
- Home Team Commissioned Officer Career Map (SPF / CNB / SCDF / SPS) — Download PDF
- Home Team NCO and Specialist Career Map (SPF / CNB / SCDF / SPS) — Download PDF
The companion guides
Knowing where you fit is the first step. The next is being able to articulate your experience in language that civilian employers understand. Download our free companion guides:
- SAF Acronyms and Verbiage Translations — plain-language translations of common SAF terminology for resumes, interviews, and LinkedIn profiles. — Download PDF
- Home Team Acronyms and Verbiage Translations — the equivalent guide for SPF, CNB, SCDF, and SPS officers. — Download PDF
- Statements of Accomplishment and Translations — before-and-after examples showing how service achievements translate into civilian resume language, covering SAF officers, Specialists and MEs, and all four Home Team agencies. — Download PDF
A NOTE ON THESE MAPS
These maps are a guide, not a prescription. Your service career is your own and no map can capture every path.
Use them as a starting point — to understand the landscape, identify the certifications worth pursuing, and frame conversations with employers and mentors.
One thing worth knowing upfront: many transitioning officers find that the private sector assesses commercial security experience separately from service seniority.
A step-down in title at initial entry before progressing again is common and does not reflect on your service record. The maps are honest about this.
YOUR NEXT CREDENTIAL
ASIS certifications are recognised by employers across Singapore and internationally as a mark of security management excellence.
The four certifications most relevant to transitioning SAF and Home Team professionals are:
- APP (Associate Protection Professional) — the entry-level ASIS credential. No academic prerequisite. Accessible to all, regardless of educational background.
- CPP (Certified Protection Professional) — the primary senior credential at Security Manager level and above. Attainable via an experience pathway without a degree.
- PSP (Physical Security Professional) — particularly relevant for officers with backgrounds in installation security, systems integration, infrastructure protection, and emergency management.
- PCI (Professional Certified Investigator) — particularly relevant for SPF and CNB officers transitioning into corporate investigations, compliance, and due diligence roles.
