School Security: One Year After Sandy Hook
The first anniversary of the Sandy Hook shootings put the state of school security in the headlines recently. There have been more than two school shootings per month in the US in the past year—and almost double that number when college and universities are included. TES reporter Richard Vaughn takes a frank look at how the school environment has changed; with active shooter drills becoming part of every child’s experience and school administrators balancing perception, cost, and effectiveness as they upgrade their security infrastructure.

Critical Infrastructure at Risk from Physical and Cyber Attacks
At 1:31 a.m. on April 16, 2013 a perimeter surveillance camera at a Pacific Gas & Electric substation picked up an unexplained streak of light that was immediately answered by the muzzle flash of a gun from just outside of the camera’s scope. In the minutes that followed more than one hundred rounds would be fired on the station, expertly disabled 17 of the station’s 23 transformers by damaging the oil-filled cooling systems.
 
The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, PBS and USA Today, each make it clear in some compelling coverage that almost a year after the attack little is known about the motivation or the people involved. What does seem indisputable is the nation’s power system, and everything that relies on it, is vulnerable to such a low-tech type of assault; and little enough has been done to mitigate that risk since this attack.
In what is clearly a second front, the BBC reports that energy companies are having difficulty securing insurance policies due to what the insurance companies consider inadequate security against cyber-attacks.

 
“So many companies are still using security technology that is not fit for purpose in today’s threat landscape,” Andy Philpott, SVP Sales, Websense. “This is a wake-up call for utility firms seeking out insurance against cyber attacks and increasingly being refused. There needs to be a mental shift refocusing from insuring against the aftermath of an attack to preventing it entering the network in the first place.”

Share your chapter’s P3 success story
Applications for the 2014 ASIS Law Enforcement Liaison Council (LELC) and the Foundation’s Matthew Simeone Award for Public Private Partnership Excellence are now being accepted. ASIS chapters are encouraged to share their successful programs developed in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies. The award will be presented in Atlanta at ASIS 2014. Earn your bachelor or master’s degree on scholarship
The ASIS Foundation is currently accepting application for six full-tuition scholarships to University of Phoenix. All security professionals are eligible to apply through April 15. Winning professionals may earn their degree of choice from any programs offered at University of Phoenix. Classroom and online courses are available.
 
Applications for two full-tuition scholarships to attend Webster University will be accepted beginning March 4. Winning ASIS members will have the opportunity to complete a graduate degree in Business and Organizational Security Management. Recipients may choose to attend a Webster University on-ground campus, Webster University online, or a combination of the two.
