ASIS International (Singapore Chapter) held its 2017 First Quarter cum Lunar New Year Networking Dinner on 10 Feb 17 at the Jin Xi Lou Chinese Restaurant located at 29 Carpenter Street.  About  45 local chapter members and 11 invited guests from key government agencies and MNCs were treated to an 8-course Chinese banquet dinner, including “Lo Hei”, a traditional must-have raw fish dish during lunar new year celebrations.
Newly elected Chapter Chairman Dex Yuen, CPP, welcomed all guests and shared his vision for the Chapter, inspired by the book “Built to Last – Successful Habits of Visionary Companies” by Jim Collins and Jerry I. Porras.  In between dinner, members were treated to a series of lucky draws for responding to a members’ survey in Dec 16 and for early renewal of their membership.  Prizes included shopping vouchers as well as a book “A Handbook On Terrorism – Asia Pacific” written by Rohan Gunaratna, Professor of Security Studies at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technology University, who is also Head of International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research, Singapore.
In line with ASIS International’s focus of raising the profile of the security practice through education, an insightful presentation on “A Fast-Evolving Security Threat Landscape Fuelled By Technology Adverse Risks Driven by The Power Of Technology” was delivered by Stanley Aloysius, Director for Asia Pacific Safety & Security at PayPal. A key takeaway from his presentation was the need to seriously consider encrypting one’s mobile communication devices, since many people today regularly transact payments from their mobile devices.
A presentation was also delivered on the ASIS International Mentorship Program, by Leonard Sng, CPP, Chapter Mentorship Program Chairperson, who highlighted the importance of succession planning in the security industry.  Besides recognizing potential security industry leaders, grooming them is key to ensuring continuity.  Leonard shared that ASIS International takes this very seriously and has developed protocols to administer the program, which will be officially launched in end Feb 17.
