ASIS International (Singapore Chapter) will be organizing the first educational field visit in 2018 to Singapore Parliament House on 6 April 2018 (Friday).

The Parliament of the Republic of Singapore and the President jointly make up the legislature of Singapore, which is based on the Westminster system. Parliament is unicameral and is made up of Members of Parliament (MPs) who are elected, as well as Non-constituency Members of Parliament (NCMPs) and Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs) who are appointed.

The main functions of Parliament are lawmaking, controlling the nation’s finances, and ensuring ministerial accountability. Parliament convenes when it is in session. The first session of a particular Parliament commences when Parliament meets after being formed following a general election. A session ends when Parliament is prorogued (temporarily suspended) or dissolved. The maximum term of each Parliament is five years, after which Parliament automatically dissolves. A general election must then be held within three months.

The current Singapore Parliament House was officially opened in October 1999.  It occupies 2.2 hectares of land with a built up area of 19,765 square metres, comprising three new blocks and a restored building. Despite its new façade with sturdy columns, the challenges of mitigating security threats and risks remain a challenge.

Venue: 1 Parliament Place, Singapore 178880.

Hourly parking is available at Parliament House Public Carpark
